My AVCon Cosplay 2016: Boa Hancock

Hey guys!

Today I wanted to share with you my final costume that I wore to Adelaide’s Anime and Video Games Convention! As you may remember from my second NYX FACE Awards challenge, I was going to be cosplaying Boa Hancock from One Piece. This was my second year cosplaying an anime character and my seventh year in a row attending the convention. No matter what, I always attend AVCon because it has made such a positive impact on my life and pushes me to create costumes that I would otherwise have no need to create and therefore never experience the joys of people falling in love with you because you’re cosplaying a character that they love. Anyway, on to my look!

MOTD: La Muerte – Book Of Life HALLOWEEN LOOK

Hey, guys!

I’ve always wanted to do a La Catrina (Sugar Skull) look but I’ve always been super hesitant because they can be extremely controversial and offensive because it is a cultural makeup look. It also happens to be the standard ‘white girl halloween makeup’ each year. So to half get involved and get my cosplay loving self into action, I decided to try to recreate one of my favourite characters, La Muerte, from the Book of Life. If you haven’t seen this movie yet, I’d highly recommend it. It is one of my favourites 🙂

Dia de los Muertos is very important to me and while I don’t celebrate it in Australia, I do recognise it and I think that remembering our loved ones who’ve passed is really important. The final day of Dia de los Muertos is also my birthday, so I feel a special connection with the holiday haha.
For a little background on the holiday itself, November 1st is typically spent remembering children who have passed (Dia de los Innocentes/Angelitos) and November 2nd (my birthday) is spent remembering adults who have passed (Dia de los Muertos). La Catrina is the Lady of Death and she looks after those who have passed on and by remembering and praying for those who’ve passed, we are helping them on their second journey through the afterlife.

La Muerte from the Book of Life is La Catrina. In the movie, La Muerte rules the Land of the Remembered and her husband, Xibalba, rules the Land of the Forgotten. Xibalba hates the Land of the Forgotten so they make a bet concerning who the mortal Maria would marry out of either of her childhood best friends: Manolo or Joaquin. The winner would become the ruler of the Land of the Remembered.

I adore La Muerte and Xibalba so much that I had to buy the Pop figures. La Muerte was actually super hard to find!

Anyway, enough of that. Here is the look that I created for La Muerte:

I wore a wig that suited the look the best. I didn’t have a nice black wig to wear and I thought that this purple wig still gave a similar effect. I tried something new with this look. I actually tried out the glue eyebrow method of blanking out eyebrows. I used regular stick glue and a spoolie to smooth down my brows and then I powdered them with a translucent powder. I did this twice and then covered them with an orange concealer to mute the blue tones from my brows. After that, I covered my face in a near white cream stick foundation and it almost completely blanked out my eyebrows (as can be seen in the photos below), so I’ll try to do it a couple more times next time I try this method. The foundation is actually very pigmented, it covered most of my spots, so it is definitely a matter of repeating the brow cover process.

New Things Coming to Pastelsparkles!

I’ve been talking about this for a while outside of this blog but I thought that seeing as the challenges are upon us, I’ll address it now so that you will all understand what is going on when I start pumping these posts out.

Firstly, the NYX Face Awards have begun and the Top 30 have been chosen and I was very excited to see some of my favourite Youtubers were selected! The NYX Face Awards are only for those in the US and Canada, I believe, so that leaves a lot of people unable to participate. It is totally fair enough because they send out large boxes of their products for the contestants to work with and the Top 6 have to fly to LA , etc. Last year I wanted to follow the challenges myself, doing my version of the challenge and posting it here but I thought about it too late. So, this year I will be doing all of the challenges and posting them here. I don’t think I will film any unless I happen upon some filming equipment in the next month, so I’ll just post my photos here instead. I’m really looking forward to it. The first challenge is called Timeless Beauty.

Another Disney Week is coming up! There was so much traffic on my blog when I did Cinderella Week for the live action movie that came out earlier this year. But that’s not the only reason that I’m doing this. Disney (this includes Pixar and other studios under the Disney Company) released many movies over the years, that all land in one week in June, probably because of Summer Holidays. I haven’t done any Disney themed looks in a while and that’s purely because there haven’t been any premieres to celebrate. I’m starting work on this now because I’ll be posting one post per day in that week and that happens to be around exam time haha. Thanks Disney. Cinderella Week was a 5 day post week and this Disney Week will be 7 days. I’m super excited for this and I hope that you are too 🙂

In July, there is a convention in Adelaide called AVCon and it is an Anime and Video Games Convention. For this convention, I plan to cosplay Frozone from The Incredibles and beforeeeee you say that The Incredibles isn’t an anime or a video game, imma let you know that there was a game – if not many – of The Incredibles and seeing as the new movie is coming out in the next year or so, I thought I’d be the perfect time to get on the cosplay!! I’ve always wanted to do a body suit cosplay but have never had the courage or known how to get my hands on one haha. I wanted to do a Shego cosplay from Kim Possible but yeah. Same issue. So, I’ll be posting more cosplay makeup and cosplay outfit things in the near future as well!

I hope that you’re all doing well. Also, If you guys have any recommendations of any makeup I should check out, I have a Priceline voucher that needs spending and I’d love to hear what you are loving right now!
