MOTD: Samhain

Hey guys!

Today is Samhain, the first day of the witches’ year! To celebrate, I’ve created a look inspired by the colours of the season, like I’ve done with previous seasons. As always, I’ll share a little bit about the holiday and share the products I’ve used! I hope that you enjoy!

Samhain (pronounced SOW-IN) is the third and final harvest of the year. It is the harvest of livestock. Anything that cannot be stored is eaten in a giant feast by a bonfire and all of the remains are given to the gods as their share for providing a good harvest. It is said to be the time when the veil between the afterlife and our life is the thinnest, so it often brings spirits of our loved ones, as well as negative spirits, so you need to protect yourself.

One story that is popular at this time is the Jack O Lantern origin story and because Wicca has Irish roots, I wanted to share the Irish origin story. So Jack was a lazy, good for nothing kinda guy and he was sat, drunk at a pub one day when he met the devil. Being the scoundrel that he was, he challenged the devil to turn himself into a coin to pay for his tab. The devil did so but instead of paying, Jack put the coin in his pocket next to a silver cross, trapping the devil in the coin. The devil was trapped in the coin for quite some time until Jack was finished with his trick. Jack made a deal with the devil that he would free him if he promised to never take his soul.  The devil did so and when Jack eventually died, because of his deeds, he was rejected from Heaven. Because he also couldn’t go to hell, his soul wandered the earth looking for somewhere to rest. The devil gave him an ember of everlasting hellfire that he put into a carved pumpkin to help guide his way to his final resting place. Isn’t that cool!

Samhain is similar to other holidays around the same time in the Northern Hemisphere, Halloween, All Souls/Saints Day and The Day of the Dead.
